The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986 requires employers to examine documentation from new employees hired after November 6, 1986 to prove their identity and eligibility to work in the United States. This act led to the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification requiring employees to attest to their work eligibility and employers to certify the documents presented appear to be genuine and relate to the individual. The most recently updated Form I-9 is available at http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-9.pdf.
E-Verify is an Internet-based system that compares information from the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification to data from the DHS and Social Security Administration (SSA) records to confirm employment eligibility. To learn more, visit http://www.uscis.gov/e-verify/what-e-verify.
