E-Verify NewsAfter more than 100 workers were accused of providing fake identification to get their jobs at a Florida business, employers wanting to avoid a similar situation may consider using the federal E-Verify employment eligibility system to ensure a legal workforce, according to a report from WZVN-TV ABC7 in Fort Myers, FL. The report is available at http://www.abc-7.com/story/26074157/company-seeks-new-workers-after-over-100-linked-to-fake-ids.

WZVN-TV reports the owners of “Incredible Fresh” in Naples, Florida are looking for new employees after a raid found more than 100 workers had allegedly provided fake IDs to gain employment. The company has already received more than 1,000 applications and hired 70 workers. U.S. law requires companies to employ only individuals who may legally work in the United States: U.S. citizens or foreign citizens with necessary authorization.

The head of the Naples Human Resource Department told WZVN-TV employers can avoid a situation like this with one easy step: “On their first day of employment they complete the I-9 form and that’s when we do the E-Verify process.” She added E-Verify is a “very quick way to ensure that employees are eligible to work in the United States.” WZVN-TV reports more than 300 Naples businesses use E-Verify but “Incredible Fresh” is not one of them.

When WZVN-TV asked “Incredible Fresh” what they will do to make sure they hire legal workers in the future, the company provided the following statement: “We are doing everything possible to make certain that every employee has verified all documents making them legal to work. We more than anyone want to make sure that we will never be put into that situation again.”

E-Verify is a free Internet-based system that compares information from an employee’s Form I-9 for Employment Eligibility Verification to data from U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Social Security Administration (SSA) records to confirm employment eligibility. The E-Verify website is available at http://www.uscis.gov/e-verify. A Spanish language version of the E-Verify website is available at http://www.uscis.gov/es/e-verify.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), E-Verify is used by more than 500,000 employers at more than 1.4 million hiring sites and joined by roughly 1,400 companies every week. Employment Screening Resources® (ESR) is a Designated E-Verify Employer Agent that helps employers with E-Verify compliance.
