The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) – the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States – has announced that Wisconsin has become the latest state to join the Records and Information from DMVs for E-Verify (RIDE) Program beginning on November 15, 2015.
RIDE is an E-Verify initiative that works in conjunction with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators to link the E-Verify system with participating state driver’s licensing agencies. Wisconsin joins Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Nebraska, and North Dakota as states participating in RIDE.
RIDE allows E-Verify to validate the authenticity of driver’s licenses and state identification cards presented by employees as identity documents on the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification by matching the data entered by employers against participating state motor vehicle department records.
Since driver’s licenses and identification cards account for nearly 80 percent of the documents used as proof of identity by employees for E-Verify, the RIDE initiative helps to reduce document fraud and boost the accuracy of employment eligibility verification process in the E-Verify system.
E-Verify is a free Internet-based system that helps employers to confirm the eligibility of newly hired employees to work in the United States. According to the USCIS, E-Verify is used by more than 600,000 U.S. employers at more than 1.9 million hiring sites. To learn more, visit http://www.uscis.gov/e-verify/.
